Early Adolescence:

Adolescence is a pivotal time of life when a child transitions to adulthood. Crucial developmental changes begin just as youth are granted greater autonomy at school, at home, and in society. Supporting youth when they enter this time of rapid change is particularly important, as research shows that many risks peak in early adolescence. The Raikes Foundation is committed to helping young people ages 10-14 successfully navigate through this stage and develop the skills, values, and passions that lead to a healthy lifetime.

Fall 2008 Focus: Youth Program Quality Enhancement

To support successful programming for early adolescents, we are launching the Youth Program Quality Enhancement Initiative.  Our research has found that participation in high quality programs can positively influence outcomes for youth. While many factors contribute to quality, skilled staff is essential to creating safe, engaging, youth-centered programs.

The Youth Program Quality Enhancement Initiative will support good programs by providing funding and the opportunity to engage staff in an intensive professional development process that reflects best practices in the field of youth development. The Initiative will focus on organizations providing out-of-school time programs in King County. While it is important that youth have access to positive developmental opportunities in all settings, research shows that youth engaged in high quality programs during out-of-school hours gain social, emotional, and intellectual benefits.

We are currently accepting Letters of Inquiry for the Youth Program Quality Enhancement Initiative.  The submission deadline is 5:00 pm on November 14, 2008.  Please see Guidelines to learn more.
